Applicants are considered on an individual basis, entirely on their own merit, but certain criteria are used in the selection process. In certain cases, a telephone interview may be required of the applicant. In all cases, however, all regulations against discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, age, disability, status as military veteran, or any other characteristics protected by law in any policies, practices, or procedures are followed.

The U.S. Department of Labor stated in 1996: "Various Colleges and Universities grant Degrees to people who cannot attend classes at a regular campus, or have already learned what the college is supposed to teach. Experiential learning credit may be given for knowledge gained through job responsibilities, personal hobbies, volunteer opportunities, homemaking, and other experiences. Colleges and Universities base credit awards on the knowledge you have already attained. Each school determines its own rules for awarding credit for prior coursework or experience."

We do not award Degrees in academic areas which are subject to separate Legislative regulations, related to the profession of physician and specialist, lawyer general nurse, dentist, midwife, veterinarian, pharmacist and architect.

So there it is: it is perfectly possible to obtain nearly every legal Degree based on the University's academic assessment of your Evaluation Form or resume.

 

Guiding Principles for Distance Learning in a Learning Society

Developments in technology and communications have brought about dramatic change in both the learning needs and the way learning opportunities are delivered in business, labor, government, and academia. We are becoming a society in which continuous learning is central to effective participation as citizens and wage-earners.

Telecommunications technologies are not only transforming our needs for education and training, but they are expanding our capacity to respond to these needs. Distance learning, with a long history of serving isolated and remote learners, has now emerged as an effective, mainstream method of education and training that provides learning opportunities that are flexible and responsive to learners’ needs.

Distance learning is now a key component of our new learning society, in which learners must take increased responsibility for control and direction of the learning process. Existing standards and criteria, often focusing on learning inputs, fail to acknowledge the many forms that effective learning can take; therefore, the focus needs to be on learning outcomes. The principles here are intended for learners, learning providers, and those charged with overseeing learning quality and effectiveness. These principles address central qualities that characterize all effective learning activities, regardless of setting or purpose, and particularly relevant to distance learning.

Employment Applications and Your Background and Purpose

In designing an overall employment selection process, the ultimate goal of an employer is to identify those individuals who have the knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies necessary to meet or exceed performance expectations. Such a process must also ensure non-discriminatory treatment of various legally - protected groups.

The establishment of job qualifications is normally the first step in such a selection process. These qualifications evolve from a detailed analysis of the essential responsibilities associated with the job and the underlying capabilities required to perform the responsibilities. Historically, job qualifications have been expressed in terms of a minimum background of training and experience as evidence of an applicant's suitability for further consideration for employment. The minimum qualifications have typically been assessed by application or resume review. Having passed this initial hurdle, the applicant is further screened on one or more subsequent procedures (e.g., written test and interview).

 

WHAT A DEGREE MIGHT MEAN TO YOU

Everyone knows that many non-degree holders are just as smart and just as qualified as degree-holders. But -- let's face it -- having that "piece of paper" opens doors that are otherwise shut to you.

Picture this: A man or woman has been hoping against hope to get a promotion and a big raise. Then one morning the boss calls him or her into his office. "Gee," the boss says, "I'd like to promote you. But we have a policy of promoting only people who have college degrees. I'm sorry".

Well, you can imagine this employee's reaction. How would you feel? "But I'm just as qualified as the person who got the promotion. What can I do? I don't have the time or money to go to college..."

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS


Job qualifications may be expressed and/or evaluated in other ways. For example, applicant qualifications may be determined solely by attaining a passing score on a written examination or by demonstrating proficiency on a work sample test. Qualifications may also be expressed in terms of job tasks or assignments, or knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs) or competencies, and assessed through a detailed applicant questionnaire or screening interview.

Because of the resources required to screen applicants using these latter types of qualification definition approaches, large-scale public sector employment practices generally make use of qualifications screening by application or resume review, as the first hurdle in the selection process. While the development of minimum qualifications remains a key element for the typical job, the concept may be extended to the identification of preferred qualifications. These are defined as the desirable background that would distinguish a well-qualified applicant from a minimally - qualified one. An applicant with preferred qualifications would have a greater likelihood of exceeding performance standards at the time of hire than the minimally- qualified applicant.

Identification of preferred qualifications is valuable for two reasons. It allows agencies to target recruitment of well - qualified applicants, and allows applicants to more realistically evaluate their hiring potential.
